Heard Only Here

This show will start out with a set of tracks that can only be heard on In The Groove. Bassist Rob Duguay, Trumpeter Josh Evans, and Alto player Greg Abate have all recently layed us on to some tracks they have recorded, and are not published on any commercially available CD. After listeneing to those tunes, I've got a few tunes I had queued up from last weeks show but never got to play from Empirical and Esperanza Spaulding.

Newport Jazz part 2

Last Sunday I attended the Newport Jazz Festival for first time. It was an incredible experience. Three stages, with jazz artists performing simultaneously throughout the day. This show features those artists that we got the chance to see at the Festival. They run the gamut from jazz legends, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins to newcomers Esperanza Spaulding and Lionel Loueke. Perhaps that best performance for me was the Chris Potter Underground. The amazing tenor sax player was seen all day playing with nearly every act, running from one stage to the next. (due to technical problems in the studio, the Newport feature starts halfway into the show).

Check out these links to read my blog entry about the Newport Jazz Fest, and to see my photo gallery. If you have pictures from the jazz fest, I invite you to upload them to the gallery.

reprise: Something Old, Something New (part 1)

Due to a technical problem, my August 2 show was not recorded (like I forgot to hit the Start button on the CD-R). So, I resurrected a recording of an old show, that I thought was interesting. This is the first hour of a show was originally broadcast in July of 2006. I may post the second hour of the show in the near future.

Another eclectic mix of old and new. Starting off with an old classic from the 70's from Les McCann (Dig the relevant lyrics), to new releases from Joey DeFrancesco. We'll conclude this hour with some modern Miles from the In A Silent Way and Jack Johnson Complete Sessions sets.

Brasil to Bop

This show starts with music inspired by brazilian jazz artists Flora and Airto. These musicians helped introduce me to jazz and world music back in the 70's. It was fun to meet Airto at Dizzy's club in NYC on Friday. We also pay tribute to three fallen jazz cats that passed on this week. Guitarists Joe Beck, Hiram Bullock, and tenor player Johnny Griffen. Griffen and Booker Ervin take us out, boppin' hard.

Jazz Note SDP is a blog devoted primarily to hard bop and especially the body of music produced between the early 50's and the mid-60's. At the center of it all is Miles Davis. This blog is especially aimed at readers who want to build a serious jazz library. I have been invited to contribute to this fine web site, and have done so with an occasional few posts, but most of the content is by its creator, friend and supporter of this podcast, Ken Blanchard. This show features tracks from albums highlighted in Jazz Note SDP. Check out the web site, learn about these fine artists and the these albums which will surely enhance your jazz library. Above all, if you dig these tunes, support the music and buy these albums and attend jazz gigs in your local area.

2nd Hour of Show

We were out of town for the 4th of July weekend, so it gives me an opportunity to make a podcast of the second hour of the show. For those many listeners of the show that have asked me to podcast the entire show, combine this with the last podcast, and there you have it. There are some great Tenor players represented here, including Eric Alexander, Marcus Strickland, Tim Armacost, Ravi Coltrane, and the master himself, John Coltrane. We also have a beautiful ballad with Miles on muted trumpet.

Tribute to George Carlin

Tonight's show is in tribute and memory of George Carlin, who passed away on June 22. Carlin was a genius with words and an innovator in the comedy genre. As one who always stood for his convictions, and would seek the 'line drawn' and cross it for the purpose of advancing his art. Sandwiched between some of Carlins most famous bits are some great jazz tunes. What a hip combination; George Carlin and Jazz!

Primo Piano

Tonight's broadcast features some great new piano jazz. Its not your typical piano set. The sound is new and modern. Other than Chick, you may not have heard these artists before. One of the goals of this show is  to introduce new or little known jazz artists to our listening community. We also pay tribute to Esbjorn Svensson the anchor of E.S.T., who passed away in a tragic scuba diving accident this week.

New Guitar and Beyond

Some great new releases from guitar bands, both new and old. It's always exciting for me to unwrap new releases from John McLaughlin and Mike Stern. Rich Goldstien is one of Hartford area's best guitarists that can groove in the style of Wes Montgomery. McLaughlin's new CD Floating Point proves that we all can get along when Eastern culture meets the Western fusion for a new creative musical sound. Also threw in Bonerama, a powerful musical force featuring 4 trombones, tuba, guitar and drums with a New Orleans funky sound all their own.
